July 1st, 2011 Happy Birthday Everyday

everyday, a photo by miss helen aka spycore on Flickr.

Hi Friends.
I’m on winter uni holidays and toughing it out through the cold dark winter times.
Amazing things are happening, though, things are unfolding, battles are being fought and I quite angstily, but sort of happily, live in a town largely without hipsters! Unfortunately it is without good vegetables, but home delivered vege boxes circumvent this. I have been nicknamed Pinky, by the man who works in the bottle shop near the bus stop and have two new grandmas. I’ve made new zines, which you can get from take care distro, did a talk at the NSW writers centre and have 1.5 years left of being embarrassingly and angstily undergrad. And I turned 30. These balloons, pictured, though, come from Jeanne Gehue’s Anxious Tea Party, for which I illustrated the invitation. She has been holding glorious(and free) art classes for anxious folk at the National Art School.

Just updating because this work by Marian Bantjes is possibly my favourite thing ever. Also this is my new duck, who is my comfort duck. He is squeaky, too.

October 19th, 2010 Back in the real world, sorta.

Last week I made this giant piece for the lovely Chris Tamm’s annual zine and street art show, Werds and Nerds at the Pine Street Community Centre in Chippendale. The show went well, I think, and made up, in my heart at least for my missing out on going to the This is not art festival in Newcastle. Sigh. Ok, there are 1.5 weeks left of uni, come on self, get back into it.

October 19th, 2010 My New Home- Unicorn Towers 2.0

Breakfast with ikea
I moved again. Such is the nomadic life of the young person in Sydney. I’m now in the east, and it smells delightful, like the ocean, in a light brand new apartment(we got the keys on the day it was finished being built). My neighbours are lovely, and people are actually friendly! It has the feel of a country town but is just down the road from maroubra. I leave an extra 15 minutes every time I go out so I can chat with my neighbours and pat dogs through fences. Hopefully I will be here for a long time!

July 12th, 2010 Uhhhh long time no see.

Obviously I am not so dedicated to this blog, despite the time I dedicate to lunching with fellow lady bloggers(hullo Amber+Bawb).
Here is a photo of my new room, in Unicorn Towers. Please pray for its longevity and that it sees plenty of love through it’s doors.

December 18th, 2009 Internet Censorship in Australia

Picture unrelated. It is a sculpture I made for uni. Most of the time, I live under a political rock. I read Chomsky and try to hide from mainstream politics because they are soul crushingly depressing, but wholeheartedly support those who are able to cope and protest when needed. I am coming out from under my rock, disgusted by our government’s plans to censor our internet. Personally, I am not into pornography. That’s my personal choice. Lots of people are, that is their choice. I understand the need to protect childrens innocence, but offensive content is incredibly easy to avoid, and need be sought out. Offensive content is everywhere in the world, and I think government censorship of the internet is oppressive and terrifying. I’m writing letters to MPs and shit. You should also, if you’ve enough time.

August 12th, 2009 Last Days of Hiromi Hotel

Hiromi Hotel(IMA, Brisbane, 2009) is being slowly dismantled. This week is your last chance to check out the Miss Helen Red Riding Hood Tent, cus by the weekend it will be gone.. or moved.. or something! Drop in for some secret tea party, and wish Little Red luck on her mission through life. If your name is Andrea, you need to go and steal our son before he is shipped back to me. My lovely Hiromi will be performing and shutting up shop, so if you’re in Brisbo, be sure to drop in and send my well wishes and deep love.

August 5th, 2009 Forest Canopy Shawl

aka Baby’s First Lace Shawl. I am now completely addicted to lace knitting and finishing this made me re-pick up Ishbel, which was what made me want to knit a lace shawl in the first place. I went for Forest Canopy(nb: to non knitters, bits that don’t make sense are knitting pattern names) because it was written by the designer of Falling Leaves, which I made a year or so ago. I’d been struggling with Flower Basket Shawl for like 4 years, so this was quite the triumph of concentration and well being. It’s so wearable and beautiful and amazing and I don’t think I’ve been as proud of anything I’ve made as I am of this shawl!

Ok, sorry lil spycore dot net, I am terrible at updating you.
What I’ve been doing in the past few weeks: catching up on uni work, creating an installation for Hiromi’s gallery debut “Hiromi Hotel” at the IMA in Brisbane. I had such an amazing time working with Hiromi and her special angel people, playing with friends, and enjoying the friendly laid back world of Brisbane that it hurt a lot to come back to Sydney!
I’m feeling a lot better now, after talking to the lovely Jeanne at the BMRI about our future adventures, Uni going back on Friday(we learn to use the workshop), Vanessa coming back from overseas, and many more lovely things! Oh, life.
