October 31st, 2006 Halloween 2006 – so much better than last year!

GIRL SANDWICH

Here is my wrap up of Halloween 2006. After work, I rocked up at Kris’ house and helped decorate for her small but sweet halloween party! Copious amounts of sweets and also meatcake(Rodd made a cake which was like meatloaf!) and some really amazing garlicky dips. We also drank Rodd’s delicious homebrew, and Kris and I(mostly I) went a little nuts on the Passion Pop. Here is me having my obligatory booze induced nap.
I left part way through the party to Surry Hills, to see ALWAYS the Alex Vivian musical experience. The lovely Misses Fi and Jane dropped me off, and I drunkenly ran up the street, in the direction of where I thought my friends were, but it turned out to be the wrong way, and in my booze induced state, I ran back. I found my friends(Vanessa, Leigh and Tim) in a pub and was overjoyed to see them, and then Vanessa and I were off to see Alex play. Having been friends with Alex since we were like, 15, although I’d seen him play before, I was overwhelmed with drunken pride and couldn’t contain myself and I was very enthusiastic and vocal in my appreciation! I really wanted him to play 21 and wild, but he didn’t.
Vanessa kindly offered me her sofa bed, and I went home with her, via the Reader’s Digest building, with Anwyn, where we stood on the door mat and heard the motor of the automatic doors grumbling and trying to open. The building is abandoned and empty and really quite amazing. I climbed into the fountain, and fitted perfectly in it and Vanessa said it was like a doll’s box!
The next morning, I was ditched by my friend who I was supposed to hang with because he was still drunk(!), and Vanessa called Tim who met us in Chinatown and we ate fresh noodles. As I was leaving for home, I saw a dress shop, and was trying on dresses when Alex rang, and he and his sweetie boyf Jack were just around the corner, so they came in and gave me dress advice! I introduced Jack to the world of cheapo asian produced(some might say sweatshop) clothing, and we thusly went on a mission to get Yum Cha and to find the boy a cropped hoody.
We ate Yum Cha at Bodhi, which was kind of awful. Admittedly, I prefer the delicious dead creatures of the sea stuffed yum chas, but the staff were really stingy about water and soy sauce and not very nice at all. And they weren’t the regular yum cha not nice waiters, they were rude not nice. I’d read reviews about how the owner is mean to the staff, and at one point, I saw evidence of this. Gross! I shant be going back, which is a pity, as I approach Yum Cha as though it were an Olympic Event! Alex got berry yoghurt and there was a healthy amount of arse slapping.
So, all in all, Halloween this year was amazing. I love friends!

October 12th, 2006 Mr Kimble, I have to go real bad and I can’t get these things off.

She is just like the little girl from “Kindgergarten Cop”, who wants to be a princess, not a police officer.
<3<3<3
Her name is Ariette but I adopted her from ohsewpretty, and apparently she prefers summer to winter, so I think she will prefer Sydney to Melbourne.

October 5th, 2006 Blowing Away… Newcastle Report.

Blowing Away

Originally uploaded by Vanessa Berry.

Gosh, I came home from Newcastle on Sunday, and I feel I am still recovering(thursday).
I’d been warned by a couple of friends of the famous Newcastle hissy fit(NHF), which involves getting pissed off about something, and packing up and catching the train back to sydney prematurely without letting anyone know. Subsequently, I was quite hesitant to go, being afraid of having the NHF, and suddenly regretting agreeing to be on three panels. I hate public speaking! What was I thinking?
Nevertheless, after spending Wednesday whinging on the phone to my friends, I packed up and arrived in Newcastle late on Thursday night, in order to be up and at em for my panel on Friday(”Judging Zines by their covers” about the move that zines have made away from being communication/personal based to being expression/art based), which was loads of fun. I spent quite a bit of time at Staple Manor, which was a shop front shrine to the photocopied arts and served as a place to hang out and also as a venue for panels and workshops, as well as helping out the incredibly sweet Maddy by being her personal assistant. I went to a panel called “No Sex Please, We’re Teenagers”, which was about morality/censorship issues in writing Young Adult Fiction, which was really awesome and made me want to write a Young Adult novel(omfg), to which I turned up rather late and during question time, asked “I was wondering, what is the chance of a root?”, the answer was overwhelmingly “Yes”, which did wonders for the old self esteem.
I then wandered on to another panel which was entitled “Zinester Protection Program” which was about anonymity and personal publishing. It was where I met the incredibly wonderful Adelaide Zine kids and made up gossip about Maddy and told everyone. I think I may have sounded like a wanker who took herself far too seriously. ho hum. It was all jokes.
At any rate, I spent my evenings in between Staple Manor and my friend Bel, who I was staying with’s house and sleeping.
On Saturday, I was reunited with Vanessa(as seen in this photo), and popped into one of her panels, which was quite serious and flipped her the bird, which she loved. We love birds, even the rude finger. I then partook in a hardcover book binding workshop, and then went to the infamous “Sugar and Spice” panel, where we discussed childhood nostalgia in art. Some man who I didn’t know applauded me, and I assumed that he had heard of my obnoxious alter ego’s adventures throughout the festival. I was really tired and had a headache and was hungry, and the best thing I said was “Actually, I think Murikami is a bit of a wanker”.
The next day was the zine fair, where I pretty much sold out of everything, and had a super hilarious friend date with Sam Twyford Moore, which involved an expedition to try and find Noodle Paradise, now, you must note at this point, that when Sam and I hang out, life is like a sitcom. See puri for further evidence. It ended with us deciding we would never find noodle paradise, and catching a taxi back to Derby St for Indian food. We ended up discussing human curry and almost throwing up from the giggles.
Oh my.
At any rate, the rest of the zine fair was awesome, I picked up some good things, and I caught the train home with Leigh and Sarah and Guy(who slept). We ate almost an entire block of chocolate on the way home, and I have since admitted to my chocolate problem and am trying to detox.

Disapointingly, I only took like 3 photos the whole time I was away, but luckily, other people are more devoted to the art of photography, so,
you can see more of Vanessa’s photos here, Lucas’ here, and my THREE(2/3 being of boys).
