Recently, I have fallen in love with bento boxes. It saves me from buying $6 thai from the restaurant next door, and saves me from expanding as a result of $6 thai. It also saves my wallet from $6 thai. It also saves my stomach from $2 pasta from the cafe just near redfern station(which is delicious, but oily).

| November 7th, 2006 | Best Night of Music Ever. | ||||||||||
The other night, I went out to see the Calvin Johnson show, which was at the Newtown Theatre. My super talented friend Sam Twyford Moore and his friend picked me up, and we drove to the city, via Mcdonalds(we are outer suburban and cannot help ourselves), giggling all the way, which made us slightly late for Kiosk. It was very exciting to see my new friend Jack(who plays the drums) in action. I had heard mixed reviews about Kiosk, but wasn’t disappointed. It was so lovely to see screaming shelias with not a lot of regard for technical precision. It made me feel as though it was ok that I loved rock n roll high school(the melbourne music school, not the ramones) but never got to visit or really see such bands at the time because I was too young. It was awesome. Lots of my favourite people ever were there, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the next support was The Cannanes! I think I had read, but I’d forgotten, but having been conditioned going to so many crappy rock shows with my ex where his band played with Sydney’s worst bands ever, I’d come to expect support bands to all be quite terrible. But the Cannanes! They are always amazing, and massively surpassed my expectations. Ella made adult contemporary jokes, bless her young heart, and I knitted through their set, totally getting goosebumps. After the Canannes relatively short set, came Woelv, and once again, my negative, jaded rock n roll self was all “Oooh, here we go”, but it was really good! I suppose it’s what you get for going to a show affiliated with K records? Quality! At any rate, I’d never heard her, but she was a quietly spoken and yowelly and quite enjoyable. I didn’t really like the whole business with recording vocal loops and singing over them, as it got a bit loud and repetitive, but I suppose it may have been more relevant had I understood french. I drank booze at some point(THANKS SAM) and very passionately told Fran from the Cannanes that I really enjoyed their set, and talked to her about the Caxton show which I went to the night before, and at that point, I realised that I was one of those wankers who I used to hate, which was tops, as I realised that I was having far more fun being a wanker who I used to hate, than being a wanker who hates people who are having fun. Calvin Johnson played his set, which was a really awesome length. It didn’t seem too funny, having seen him only in January, to see him again, and I will admit that I think I’ve seen him more than almost any other band this year(!), but I could watch Calvs play every month and be completely content. He should visit Australia more often. After the show when Sam was buying cds, I’m afraid that my drunk arse had a conversation with Mr Johnson, which went along the lines of “Hey Calvin Johnson, don’t you think it’s funny that everyone calls you by your full name when they’re referring to you as a person? I like to call you Mr Johnson” and we shook hands and he said I should call him Calvin or something. I think I also mentioned that I sat in beer. I suppose, if you were a touring musician, I am the sort of drunk and hilarious local you’d possibly enjoy meeting. I’m just sad that this show was on last weekend, when lots of indie rockers(haha cliche) went to the Darren Hanlon gig the night before, and missed out on this one, and subsequently when I’ve retold the story of this show, I’ve had to lie about the levels of awesomeness, in order to not sadden them. All in all, this show reminded me of the possible magic that there can be in an evening of live music. I did not take any photos, because although I am a wanker who enjoys music, I have not yet stooped to new lows of amateur rock photography, unlike everyone else in the world(pretty much). It is quite distracting when you’re really getting into music and someone is snapping away and using their flash. Or if you’re seeing a band and there are like 3 people in the audience and the band’d girlfriends are taking photos of them. This is obviously a pet peeve of mine.
